How to Read Messages Without Sending a Seen Receipt

A seen receipt is sent when you open the messaging app and the conversation loads. Reading the notification instead avoids it: NotiLog saves each notification's text as it arrives, so you can read the message without opening WhatsApp, Messenger or SMS — and without turning on the blue tick.

What triggers a seen receipt

The read state is not caused by the message reaching your phone. It is caused by the app telling the server that the chat is on screen:

Reading a notification does not do any of these. The notification is rendered by Android; the messaging app is not launched, so no read event is produced.

Which apps show receipts

AppSeen receipt
WhatsAppYes — double blue ticks
MessengerYes — "Seen"
TelegramYes (unless receipts are disabled in settings)
Instagram DirectYes — "Seen"
SMS / MMSUsually no read receipt

Behaviour differs by app and version. If the app does not send a receipt at all, there is nothing to avoid.

Read from the notification log

  1. Grant Notification Access once — step-by-step guide.
  2. Let notifications arrive. Each one is saved with the app name, sender, text and time.
  3. Open NotiLog → Home and tap the conversation, or use Search to find the message by text or app.
  4. Read it there. The original app is never opened, so the sender sees nothing.

If it does not capture, the phone's battery saver is almost always the cause — see the battery fix.

Questions

What exactly sends a seen receipt?

Opening the app and loading the conversation. Reading a notification does not launch the app, so nothing is sent.

Does opening the notification itself send a receipt?

No. Tapping the notification is handled by Android. Only launching the chat screen marks it as read.

Which apps show seen receipts?

Most messaging apps — WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Instagram Direct. SMS usually does not.

Can I read a message after it was deleted?

If the notification arrived first, yes. The saved copy stays on your device after the sender unsends it.

Does NotiLog upload what I read?

No. Everything stays encrypted on your device — see the privacy policy.
